Remove supported EXIF metadata from a photo
File Privacy can create a new JPEG/JPG or PNG copy with the metadata containers supported by its cleaner removed. The original file is not changed, and the cleaned copy is scanned again before download.
Open the private checker →Why this information can matter
Removing EXIF is useful when a supported field reveals more than you intend to share, such as GPS coordinates, capture time, camera details, software names, author text or device identifiers. The cleaning action works on recognized metadata containers rather than rewriting the visible picture. That distinction matters: it avoids promising a new image or a universal privacy transformation.
A careful browser-local workflow
- 1
Inspect the file first so you know which supported findings are present.
- 2
Choose the cleaning action only when the checker offers it for the recognized JPEG or PNG.
- 3
Wait while the browser creates a separate copy and runs that copy through the same supported parser again.
- 4
Review the clean-copy verification message, download the copy, and keep the original only where you intend to keep it.
What this version supports
For JPEG files, the cleaner removes supported EXIF and XMP APP1 segments, Photoshop/IPTC APP13 segments and JPEG comment segments without recompressing the image data. For PNG files, it removes supported eXIf, tEXt, zTXt, iTXt and tIME chunks while retaining image and color-management chunks. The downloaded file is the newly created copy.
Limits to keep in mind
Removal is limited to the containers implemented by the current parser and cleaner. Proprietary or unsupported metadata may remain, and information may still be visible in the pixels or filename. The re-scan confirms that no supported high- or medium-severity findings remain; it is not a forensic guarantee of anonymity or complete metadata erasure.
Inspection and cleanup run in your browser. Selected file bytes are not uploaded to FrAIFlow servers. The result describes only the supported structures this release can observe.
